Smart Retrofit of 166 Social Houses - Aarschot, Belgium

Targeting 166 social houses built between the 1970's and 1990's, this project aimed to modernise their energy performance standards. Not so unusual, except in this case KES offered a groundbreaking energy performance guarantee to the social housing company. In simple terms, if we didn't deliver the energy improvements, we would pay for the energy costs.

166 social housing units, built between 1970 and 1990, were renovated using energy efficiency measures. The project included cavity wall insulation, roof insulation, replacement of windows and doors, installation of a smart ventilation system, and replacement of boilers and radiators.

KES had overall responsibility for the works and ensured intensive quality control during the execution phase. Extensive tenant support was also provided with KES guiding residents through the various phases of the project, with a focus on coaching them how to use the new technical systems in their homes.

Given the groundbreaking nature of the performance guarantee offered in this project, we also installed our Smart Retrofit Metering Technology before and after renovation, to demonstrate the real energy performance improvements that were made. Whilst a guarantee of a 25% was made, in reality an average improvement of 37% was realized, saving tenants an average of €1,000 a year.
